Political is Spiritual
Back in the days, when God commanded mankind to spread out and populate the earth, taking dominion over creation, He was disappointed by humanity’s choice to do the opposite. The tower of Babel was a direct threat to God’s purposes. When people said ‘Let’s make a name for ourselves’, they implied giving birth to a new corporate entity apart from God.
We see the same thing happen in 1 Samuel 8 where Israel asks for a king like the peoples around them. God knows they have rejected Him. Likewise he knows the general pattern of establishing a power structure like this. The bottom line is that human strength is not enough to hold such powers. People will end up as slaves.
Many places do we see that spiritual powers are deceiving the nations. Often these spirits are named by the nation or people they rule. The spirit of Egypt, Ethiopia, Assyria, and so forth. Babylon is also a spirit deceiving the nations. They teach the nations and lead them into bondage.
When Jesus came to earth, lived a righteous life and gave himself as a ransom for our trespasses, he became victorious over these spirits and broke their power to rule. Col. 2:15 says he exposed and disarmed them through his victory on the cross.
2 Cor. 10:5 shows us that the victory of Jesus is applied in our daily living and against any power that seeks to rise up against the knowledge of God.
In the end, there is only one kind of corporateness that is safe, namely the one in Jesus Christ. This is a crucified and truthfilled reality, void of self-centered pursuits.
As we stand back and look at what we consider political today it pertains to communities and society at large. There is absolutely no place where the enemy doesn’t seek to steal territory from God and His people and wherever that potential exists there will be spiritual battle. Politics is one such expression. As followers of Jesus we cannot abdicate the content of politics to other worldviews. Jesus died to reconcile all things unto God, especially all relational expressions, which politics pertain to. The eternal King of Kings is concerned about these things. He first came to set things straight by announcing His Kingdom an internal kingdom, unseen to the natural eye. Out of this Kingdom flows the expressions and works that we can see so vividly every day. Care and compassion, righteousness and justice and all companions of true Kingdom life.
Politics can in no way be separated from our walk with God and we as His people have greater potential to stand at a place of service in these places. Prayer and spiritual warfare come out of a true Biblical perspective.
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. (Isaiah 9:6)
