Democratic doesn’t mean it’s right
Democracy in its purest form is nothing but the majority opinion of the people. If a people can, then, be swayed to have majority expression of certain thought, the strangest results will occur. A hedonistic society thinks (or feels) only of itself and has no capacity to be others centered or unselfish. As much as we admire the notion of democracy in the world today it is not the measure of good or evil. Righteousness is not measured by the form of government we have, though it is a significant vehicle. If we become selfish, self- seeking, hedonistic individuals, our communities will become a reflection of the same. This is why personal and public life cannot be divided in essence. It doesn’t mean we expose every private secret, but it means there MUST be cohesion between the life lived in private and the life lived in public.
Society at large seems to have given up on the issue of internal liberty, that we can experience purity of thought and heart. When we accept the largely evolutionary, and hopeless, belief that we are sophisticated animals, we will naturally function within the parameters of this broken worldview. Do we need to be subjects of our feelings and ‘instincts’ or can we actually master them? Do children and youth need to be exposed to perversions such as violence and pornography, which often starts building a cage around their lives that they eventually cannot break out of due to this broken worldview? Why do those who have themselves traded innocence and purity for brokenness and sin believe that it is they way everyone should go? This is the path of self destruction! Historically, when societies have entertained the hedonistic worldview it has lead to eradication of everything that held society together and they faced annihilation in one way or another.
If we are going to continue being selfish we are running into a dead-end road. There is no hope in self-gratification. Whether we live in community or not there is another law that stands much higher. Anyone who has experienced the joy of doing unselfish acts understands this. All true heroes have expressed their heroism through unselfish acts. We still know how to recognize it, but we don’t see them much anymore.
Democracy as a mechanism is not the answer, nor the ideal. We need to go deeper, much deeper and restore the DNA that produces true free societies. It starts inside, by breaking the bondage of sin and selfishness. We need revival and reformation. Jesus Christ has dealt with this and as we surrender to Him in our brokenness, He will rebuild and restore hope. We lose everything by holding on to our brokenness and selfish ways. We gain everything by surrendering to Him. And alongside the new found internal liberty we have Scripture that will teach us so many of God’s ways. These are the ancient ways that match our design. They are also the ways of the future. Just because a TV is old, you don’t all of a sudden decide to operate it by the manual of a dish washer. We are spiritually deceived, we are as deep in fear as never before and fear always leads to self protection, defensiveness and control. People are scared and cold. We need to break through this spirit of death raging through our communities.
The Kingdom of God is not a democracy. It is a Kingdom with a King, but a very different King altogether. His way is to enable every constituent to be a truly free participant in His Kingdom, contributing through character and covenants, bringing life and building the future together with the King. This Kingdom is coming and it is even here. Of its increase there shall be no end. It’s time to surrender to the King and find true life!
